Freegan...simplicity or sin?

So here is a question for the hoi polloi.
Is being freegan wrong? Mostly the acquiring food from dumpster part is what I'm asking about (horrid sentence structure I know)
Just for the record, in the state of Oregon it is illegal to remove anything from a dumpster for purpose of recycling. (why, I don't know?). there is nothing in any Oregon law about removing something from a dumpster for consumption.
I know it is not safe/sanitary...but that is not a big deal to me. I have Crohn's disease, what's it gonna do...give me a tummy ache. I am just trying to think of way's to stop contributing to the wastefulness I see in our culture. Of course this is not reference to things that would be grossly in trash, like a Bunt cake next to coffee grounds, but what of a bag of oranges that has a cut int the wrapping , or a can of soda past expiration, or a bag of bread.
Apparently 'Dess and I are poor, you won't believe what the culture determines as poor. We know we have to make every dollar stretch and be more frugal than most people we know. But we have never had to be hungry or cold or without friends and love...how can lack of cash alone make you poor?

Any way, enough with the anti-consumerist rant (yes i am still a conservative, I've just crossed a line and gone all Oregon-style.) Would any of you eat food if you knew it was taken from a dumpster? Would you eat a can of expired food from your pantry? Would you feed it to your children?

With that said, who wants to come over for dinner?
"Dess will probably kill me for this ;-)

I saw an Oprah on this. So much is wasted that it seems like a good idea to share the surplus. H2O in Dallas has day old bread for $1 and Gleaners is also a good idea. My sister does that for $12 a month and gets lots and lots of good food that restaurants/stores can't use. She got a 3 gallon tub of green cake icing once. That wasn't very useful, but most of the time it is good stuff like tortillas and cheese and stuff.

Don't worry, we are poor too (according to our cultures standards ) and don't seem to be suffering much for it.
