A successful insane attempt

This last weekend was great. My grandmother was turning 75 on Saturday and my Aunt was throwing her a surprise party. I really wanted to go, especially when I found out there would be cousins there that I have not seen in 10 years. I came up with this crazy plan and pulled it off!

The plan: wake up at 4:00 a.m. to shower enough to be awake, put girls and sister in van half awake, kiss Jeff good bye - gently do to neck pain. We then drive to Albany to pick up my cousin and her 2 boys (ages 7 and 10) to max out every seat in the minivan, drive 7 hours to make it to the party on time. Once there, rush to the bathroom in the lodge (which was through the bar) to dress girls and myself, along with 4 other cousins. Surprise grandma big time! We got her good!

We then visited for a few hours hopped back in the van and drove 3 hours (half way home) to my parents for the night - where both girls ended up in bed with me and I didn't get much sleep. Then church on Sunday and hit the road again for home - 3 and half more hours.

All of the kids did fabulously. Heidi loved having the boys in the back with her, and all they have wanted for years is a sister, so she was spoiled. Having my cousins portable DVD player along was definitely a plus.

The trip was good - and hard. I love that I am part of a very large (and loud) family. Some of my cousins have made decisions that are hard to watch happen. I will always be there to love and support them, and pray that one day they will all find the peace that passes all understanding that I know.

Question: would you have attempted 4 kids in a minivan for 800 miles in 2 days?? Leave me a comment and let me know.

Depends on their ages. Four kids that can watch a movie together...sure. Four babies that can't watch a movie? No way! Portable DVD players are soooooo useful in long trips with children!

I agree with Kellie. With company and entertainment, it sounds like a lot of fun and a great adventure (minus the poor night's sleep).

Had a blast Dess. Thanks so much for coming up with the plan and making it happen. Trip I will never forget!

Possibly, it really just depends how badly I want to go...800 miles, that's a whole bunch!
